Normalise audio levels

What it does

Sets the level of a file for you. Choose Peak to make a quiet recording as loud as it can go without distorting, or Loudness to match the average level, which is how loud it actually sounds.

How to normalise audio

1. Open your file.
2. Pick a Method: peak or loudness.
3. Listen. What was done shows the level it set.
4. Export. To level several files the same way, open each one in turn with the same method.

Peak or loudness?

Peak finds the single loudest moment and scales the whole file so that point sits just below full scale (−0.2 dB). It is exact and never distorts, but one sharp drum hit can hold an otherwise quiet track back.

Loudness matches the average level instead, then applies a limiter so the boost can’t push peaks into clipping. Use it when files need to sound equally loud next to each other. To level many files at once to a streaming or podcast target, use Match loudness on the audio joiner.
