Change audio volume

What it does

Turns a whole file up or down, from silent to three times its original level, in 5% steps. It is the simplest fix for a recording that is too quiet to hear, or too loud next to everything else.

How to change the volume

1. Open your file.
2. Move the Volume slider: 100% is the original level.
3. Play the loudest part to check it doesn’t distort.
4. Export the result.

Louder is not always better

Boosting raises everything by the same amount, including background hiss, and pushing well past 100% can flatten the loudest peaks into distortion. If you want a file as loud as it can go without clipping, the normalize tool works out the right amount for you. If the problem is hiss, remove the background noise first.
